Mulch & Mortar

About Mulch & Mortar

Mulch & Mortar is a small, independent set of material calculators for people planning home and yard projects. It started with a simple frustration: standing in a home center trying to work out how many bags of concrete fit a post hole, with three different answers from three different websites.

Every calculator here shows the formula it uses and a worked example, so you can check the arithmetic yourself. The default values, such as bag yields, seeding rates, and pitch multipliers, come from manufacturer labels and university extension publications rather than guesses. When a figure varies by supplier, like sod pallet coverage, the calculator asks for your number instead of assuming one.

What these estimates are for

They are for planning and shopping. They are not engineering advice. Structural decisions such as slab thickness, joist spans, and post depth depend on local codes, soil, and climate, and you should confirm them with your building department or a licensed contractor.

How the site is funded

The site is free to use and is supported by advertising. Ads do not affect the formulas or the defaults. We do not sell products and have no relationship with the manufacturers whose bag sizes and coverage rates appear here.

Corrections

If a result looks wrong, or a default no longer matches what stores sell, tell us. Corrections are made promptly and noted on the calculator page.
